The Bad Baby Names Phenomenon

The internet has spawned many phenomena that didn’t exist just a few short years ago. It’s hard to believe, but there was a time when we all got along, somehow, without the help of things that today seem indispensable: email; instant messaging; photo sharing; 24 hour weather reports for anywhere on the planet; circles of ‘friends’ wider than North America; and forums or chat rooms for every topic under the sun.

Of all the forum topics that have sprouted in the last few years, one of the more curious ones is the fascination with bashing ‘bad baby names’. There are suprisingly large groups of people who spend considerable amounts of time tracking down, observing, reporting on, and generally ‘trashing,’ what they consider to be ‘bad baby names.’

First, a few numbers: the biggest website dedicated to the cause of ferretting out substandard baby names appears to be a forum called Big Bad Baby Names. If you look at their public statistics, you’ll see they are approaching 1.8 million total posts on their site — that’s right, 1.8 million! That is one busy forum — on their busiest day ever, June 25, 2007, they had 738 users online at the same time! Now granted, not every post, or every thread, on that forum has been devoted to making fun of other peoples’ baby names. But a good number of them are.

Big Bad Baby Names is not the only site where you can express your opinions about the legions of kids with names like Mackenzee, or Jak, or Emalee, or whatever. There are a number of smaller sites as well, such as the blog called Bad Baby Names. And the Bad Baby Names phenomenon has now spread to books, with the publication of not one, but two, Bad Baby Names books in March, 2008 alone, including ‘Bad Baby Names’ by Michael Sherrod, Matthew Rayback, and Joey Gates, and ‘Seriously Bad Baby Names’, by Chris Okum.

The media is paying attention. The book ‘Bad Baby Names’ has garnered a number of reviews, and most impressively, spawned the Worst Bad Name Contest on a New York Times blog. Certainly, pre-internet, one or two books on this topic appeared over the years — John Train’s ‘Remarkable Names of Real People,’ published in 1977, is a classic of the genre. But nothing from the previous century gave a clue as to the depth of feeling that many people apparently harbor about other peoples’ weird name choices. It’s as if thousands of people were just waiting for the internet to arrive, so they could release their pent-up feelings about parents who get it wrong.

But why are people so fascinated with bad baby names, and in some cases, getting quite worked up about it? Are names something that we, as a society, all have a proprietary interest in? We don’t seem to revel, as a community, in exposing other peoples’ bad decorating choices, or poor taste in dress (celebrities excepted). Why do we care so much about other peoples’ baby name choices?

Whatever the reason, there has never been a better time for you if you are a stickler for traditional baby names. If you find that names like Ambyre, Jaylinn, Makenzee, Jordynn, Maricatherine, and Jaymes make you nostalgic for the days of Tom, Mary, and Donald, you are not alone. But if you think your blood pressure can take it, here are a few more ‘bad baby names,’ taken from ‘Bad Baby Names’ by Sherrod, Rayback, and Gates. The surnames are included, because often, it’s the combination that is so funny. Butcher Baker; Church Bell; Gamble Moore; Pickle Parker; Candy Cane; Chicken Lamb; Ima Payn; Dark White; Magenta Rose, Beetle Bates, Space Buck, and Leo Lion.

The Appeal of Military Clothing

Until recently, military clothing was really only worn by soldiers. Its primary purpose was to be a uniform denoting which country a soldier was fighting for, as well as offering functional benefits. Today things have changed and military clothing is worn by civilians and army personnel alike.

Most military clothing manufacturers stress function above fashion to ensure that their clothes offer excellent performance and durability.

In designing their clothes, they consider the different types of stressful situations that a soldier might be exposed to.

Well placed pockets and pouches on jackets and smocks, for instance, help the wearer to access easily daily essentials like navigation tools, food and medical supplies. Windproof and waterproof jackets are another example of how manufacturers consider the conditions clothes might be worn in when they design them.

One of the UK’s leading military clothing brands has even designed an item of base layer clothing that aims to be the best second skin a person could have. It both insulates the wearer and transfers moisture away from his or her body to the next layer of clothing, thus keeping him or her dry. The fabric used in this product is also fast drying and has a natural resistance to smells and microbial growth.

This sort of attention to detail is typical of military clothing design. It is also why so many non-army personnel choose to wear military garments. Many outdoor enthusiasts in particular love the practical benefits offered by these clothes. Since these people are often exposed to extreme weather conditions, wearing clothes which have been specially designed to protect against the cold for example, has a clear appeal.

The base layer clothing described above is a good example of an item of military clothing that has particularly caught on with those who engage in high intensity activities such as mountain biking and climbing.

Today the broad appeal of military clothing is a direct result of its emphasis on practicality over appearance or substance over style.

Designer Baby Bedding

Furnishing a nursery? You have a lot of choices to make, from type of crib to window treatments. Baby bedding is perhaps the most important item you choose for your nursery. Designer baby bedding will make it easier to decorate and accessorize the room. Besides the decorative aspects, designer baby bedding is often made from higher-quality fabric and materials. Remember that your baby has sensitive skin — choose designer linens with a high thread count for softness. Another reason you should consider designer baby bedding despite its additional cost is quality construction. If a designer puts his name on a product, chances are materials and workmanship are superior. But one of the greatest features of designer products is versatility and variety.

When you buy baby bedding, it usually comes in a set that includes a fitted sheet, a quilt, bumpers and a crib skirt. So far so good, but then you’re on your own as far as accessorizing and colorizing the room goes. Wouldn’t it be nice to have everything color-coordinated and consistently designed, with a theme that runs through the walls and windows as well as the bedding? With designer baby bedding, you’ll get more than the basics.

Some designers offer wallpaper or wallpaper borders, as well as rugs and furniture that coordinate with your bedding. Matching lamps, wall hangings, mobiles, diaper stackers and toy boxes are usually offered as extras, but should be seriously considered if you want the nursery to have that finished, upscale look. And again, all these accessories will be safe, top quality and well-made if they carry a designer label. Designer baby bedding, although often more expensive, is usually more cost-effective in the long run. It will last longer, come with coordinating accessories and lend an unmistakable unity and harmony to the design of your baby’s room.

Why Buy Original Art?

Why pay money for an original piece of art work, when you can buy an inexpensive print?

When it comes right down to it, creating a piece of art is a mystery. No artist, no matter how articulate, can explain why a particular work of art was created. By buying an art work you buy a piece of that mystery and have something that no one else will ever have.

An original piece of art is a passionate creation, which not only reflects the soul of the artist, but your soul as well, because you chose it. Owning a piece of art instead of owning a reproduction, is like having a person who is important in your life actually in the room with you, rather than having a photograph of that person on your desk. It reflects a piece of you that you cherish and want to share with the rest of the world.

For most people if they like a work of art, it is because it profoundly affects them. It reminds them of a time in their lives that was personally moving or important. And the exact same piece of art work will mean totally different things to different people, because every person is unique.

An original piece of art work can inspire lives and has the power to nurture and nourish the spirit.

If you compare a room with bare walls to one with original art work, the room with the original art work will be vibrant and alive. People will want to visit that room, very much the same way they want to visit museums, because the art work touches their soul in a very personal way. It reminds them of their humanity, of their significance in the world, something that is lost is the business of everyday lives.

Original art is inspiring and moving; it helps people get up in the morning, get through that meeting that they just didn’t want to go to. It can give people the courage to go on, because it expresses something wonderful and profound about themselves, which they may not be able to articulate. That’s why people say, “I don’t know why I bought this piece of art, all I know is that I love it!”

8 New Year Business Time-Saving Tips

Happy New Year! Well 2008 is finally here - and there’s no better time to take stock of what’s working and what’s not in your business. A New Year is the ideal time to put in place the necessary changes to get the most out of your business and ultimately increase productivity.

1. When are you at your best? During the daytime? Towards the latter part of the evening, or at the crack of dawn? Decide at whichever point throughout the day, or night you’re at your most productive and preserve that time of the day for when your powers of concentration are at their highest and tackle the jobs which demand your greatest creativeness, imagination and unbroken concentration. You’ll save yourself time, because you won’t be trying to deal with things that you’re not really mentally alert enough to undertake.

2. If you’re anything like I used to be, you’ll be checking your messages throughout the working day or responding to email alerts constantly. STOP! If possible reserve ½ an hour to an hour at the beginning or the end of each day to answer emails and phone messages (unless the messages are urgent). Develop a more cost-effective attitude with regard to your time and how you spend it. Time is money after all.

3. Type up some typical answers to email or phone enquiries, so that you’re not wasting time trying to think of responses to various phone callers who tend to ask the same types of questions. Likewise for emails, don’t waste time typing out a new one each time; have a couple of stock emails that you send out to potential clients.

4. Know when to say no. We would all like to help out where we can, however try not to extend yourself too far. By taking on too many things, you’re in danger of completing none of them satisfactorily and performing fewer tasks successfully is preferable to producing a large number to a second-rate standard. If you are able to assign some of your tasks to someone else - do so, in order to avoid over-working.

5. If you have a website create an online payment facility, so you lessen the need for handling cash and cheques.

6. Be aware of when you’re wasting time. That report you needed to type up and send to a regular client could have been completed and dispatched by a virtual assistant in a S of the time. The email you responded to from someone who was not a client on a busy Monday morning has generated more correspondence than you would have preferred - but ultimately with no purchasing of your goods, or take up of your service. Stopping to have a quick 5 minute chat with a colleague during a busy part of the day turns into a 40 minute gossip session. That brief call you had to take became a 30 minute interruption. Invest in a timer of some sort and get into the habit of expecting each phone caller to come to the point of the call within 2 - 3 minutes.

7. Aim to handle mail (NO MORE THAN TWICE). Theoretically, deal with mail as soon as you’ve read it. If you don’t have to keep it, put it in the bin straight away. If it can be left to a later date - file it at once with a date to clear the matter. If action is necessary do so as soon as possible. Keep your work space as free from clutter and unresolved issues as you can.

8. Stop trying to be a one man/woman band. Even if you’re currently a small business of just one person (such as a home business, life coach, publisher or lettings agent etc…), it’s just not possible to do everything yourself. Enlist the help of someone to off load at least a few of those time-consuming secretarial/administrative tasks to. Such as producing your documentation, answering phone calls, responding to routine emails, telemarketing. Work out which parts of your business can be handled competently by another professional and either employ someone, or outsource it.

The best thing about tote bags is that they provide several practical purposes, apart from being an indispensable part of everyone?s wardrobe. More recently, a lot of companies have been employing tote bags for their promotional activities.

Take, for instance, a common scenario in a mall. Soaps, shampoo, moisturizers, and other similar products are kept inside a transparent-plastic tote bag with the name of the brand company embossed in the outer part of the bag. The bag is used as a promotional item. The transparent-plastic material was utilized so that consumers could see the products they are carrying right away.

This technique has proven to be one of the most effective marketing strategies. Almost all companies have used promotional tote bags as handouts, whether in promoting a new product, strengthening brand recognition or keeping their buyers as happy as possible.

Giveaways as part of advertising is a common practice nowadays but not all can be as ideal as tote bags are. They are the most practical. They can serve the marketing objective of the company, while at the same time consumers can make use of them in their personal wardrobes. They appreciate the gift even more and because of this, they end up with a higher opinion of the company who gave these tote bags to them.

Tote bags are also used as corporate gifts. These are wonderful items to be used as giveaways for the employees of the company. They are a great way to express the company’s appreciation for a job well done. They typically have the bag printed with the company logo. Sometimes, initials or the full names of the employees are also included in the imprint.

Tote bags can be used for almost any kind of marketing promotion and for virtually any product. If you want to be unique, there are still many other small things that you can incorporate into the bag for an added attraction. In this way, not only are you satisfying your consumers more, but you are also drawing many business opportunities your way.

The Skinny on Buying a Baby Crib

There are many joys to welcoming a new baby into your home: the infectious laughter, the wide curious eyes drinking it all in; funny faces and gummy smiles; teeny toes and explorative little hands. Yes babies truly are little miracles…when they aren’t causing sleepless, howling nights, producing wretchedly foul diapers or pulling hair and poking eyes. And if America’s Funniest Home Video’s has taught us anything, they tend to execute many a frequent and powerful fist, t-ball bat or kick ball to the groin.

So why not try to eliminate all of your superfluous stress while you can by adequately preparing for the arrival of baby. The first thing you should do is order a crib. It’s important to know and understand all of the criteria for buying a crib and familiarize yourself with your own special needs. So take a minute and read through this easy to follow prep list; help to ease some of your pre-stress before the real stress begins:

The Skinny on Baby Cribs

First things first, your baby will probably be spending the majority of his or her time in the crib. Almost two thirds of their fresh little lives are spent sleeping, or at least trying to. Being a baby takes up a lot of energy. Learning and adjusting to a brand new world can make someone very sleeping so it’s important to have a safe and comfortable place to retire to.

It’s important that the slats on your crib are close enough together that your baby won’t be able to finagle his or her big, round head between them. It’s also very important not to put a crib near or next to a window, especially one with blinds or drapery. It’s possible for babies to strangle themselves with the cords on blinds or drapes, and there have been some tragic incidences where babies have pushed themselves through loose screens on windows. If the dimensions of a room prevent you from being able to avoid a crib near drapes or a window, a good way of eliminating the danger is using a clothes pin to gather up and cinch the cords at the top or cutting the cord in half, so that instead of a loop, you have two straight lines.

Finally, it’s a good idea to buy a crib that has adjustable railings so that you will be able to pick up your baby with ease. Many cribs today are made with railings that lower on both sides and even have storage drawers beneath the crib, for added convenience.

The Skinny on Safety

There are some crucial regulations that you should know before purchasing a crib; measurements and safety regulations that you should be sure to arm yourself with before you take on the daunting task of picking out a crib:

  • The space between crib slats should be absolutely no more than 2 and 3/8 inches
  • The drop sides must be, at the very least, 9 inches above the mattress support when in the lowered position
  • When in the raised position, the top of the drop side must be at least 26 inches above the mattress support at its lowest position
  • The standard crib size mattress (51 3/4 inches long by 27 3/4 inches wide) should fit snugly within the crib frame; if you can fit two fingers between the mattress and the frame than the mattress is too small and there is a chance that your baby could become dangerously stuck in this space

The Skinny on Everything Else

There is a little controversy surrounding whether or not baby bumpers (those soft pads that line the inside of a crib) are actually safe to have in a crib with your baby. They were originally considered a safety feature, preventing babies from being able to slip their heads between the rails and other dangers, however recently a growing number of organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics have deemed them unsafe, and a hazard to your child’s safety.

Also, any crib made before 1973, in other words, any crib made before a rigid set of safety standards were solidified for baby cribs, are more likely to malfunction and pose a threat to your baby. Some organizations suggest that you try to avoid second hand cribs in general as used cribs are apparently the cause of over 50 infant deaths per year.

Finally, try to avoid decorative detail on cribs. Protruding pieces can break off and create choking hazards; as well, cut out designs along the side of the crib have been known to trap babies arms and legs causing physical injury.

So there you have it; an excellent jumping point from which to begin your search for the perfect crib. Make sure you visit the American Academy of Pediatrics website for a complete list of regulations and safety tips from the experts as well as the Consumer Product Safety Commission to get the lowdown on all of the brands you have been looking into.
